Lateral file cabinet – A home office or workplace is not complete without the addition of at least one filing cabinet. The cabinets provide extra storage space for documents and papers that otherwise fill your desktop. Horizontal and vertical file cabinetry is commonly found in offices, but lateral files are another option. The dimensions of a transverse filing cabinet are fairly standard across manufacturers. The lateral file cabinet is much wider and is half as high as a vertical cabinet, if not shorter. Lateral cabinets typically have two drawers, although some styles have three drawers, four drawers or as many as five drawers.

The exact dimensions of lateral file cabinet vary depending on the manufacturer. The cabinet may be slightly wider or narrower. The name of the design comes from the wide form of the cabinet and has no influence on the height. Higher cabinets are also referred to as lateral filing cabinets, even those that are as high as the traditional horizontal cabinets. The design allows the drawer to open and see files stacked side by side with each side facing up. Other designs, including the horizontal design, use folders located in front of the others.
